OTTOMAN EMPIRE

50 Kurush - 1255 Yr 7

KM-678 - 3,61 g - 17,9 mm

Edge - Reeded

The obverse features the toughra of Sultan Abd al-Mejid (b1823-d1861), the Ottoman Turkish ruler from 1839 to 1861.  In 1853, he resisted Russia's attempt to act as protector for the Christians in the Ottoman Empire which led to the Crimean War. Below the toughra is the regnal year 7 in Arabic and to the right is EL-GHASI. The reverse has an Arabic legend with  QUSTANTINIYAH (the Turkish name for Constantinople) and the accession year of 1255.

The obverse features the toughra of Sultan Abd al-Aziz (b1830-d1876), the Ottoman Turkish ruler from 1861 to 1876.  He was deposed in 1876 and succeeded by his nephew Murad V who only ruled a few months until he was declared to be insane.  Below the toughra is the regnal year 2 in Arabic. The reverse has an Arabic legend with  QUSTANTINIYAH (the Turkish name for Constantinople) and the accession year of 1277.

The obverse features the toughra of Sultan Abd al-Hamid II (b1844-d1918), the Ottoman Turkish ruler from 1876-1909.  He was deposed by his brother during the liberal young Turk revolution of 1909. Below the toughra is the regnal year 31 in Arabic and to the right is EL-GHASI. The reverse has an Arabic legend with  QUSTANTINIYAH (the Turkish name for Constantinople) and the accession year of 1293.
