SPANISH COLONIAL - VICEROYALTY OF PERU

Edge - Engrailed

The obverse features a bust of Ferdinand VII encircled by the Latin legend FERDIN-VII-D-G-HISP-ET-IND-REX (Ferdinand VII by Grace of God King of Spain and the Indies) with the date 1815 below the bust.  The reverse has the crowned Habsburg arms encircled by a garter of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The denomination 8 S flanks the arms.  A Latin legend IN-UTROQ-FELIX-AUSPICE-DEO (Under the auspices of God there is happiness on both sides) with the mintmark (LIMAE monogram) at left bottom and the assayers' initials JP (for Juan Martínez de Roxas and Pablo Cano Melgarejo) at the right bottom.

This was the last gold 8 Escudos minted in the Spanish dominions of the western hemisphere and the first and only minted at the Cuzco mint.

This coin was minted at the Lima mint and is the first type of this denomination minted under the republic. The obverse has a standing liberty encircled by the nation's motto FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION (Firmness and Happiness for the Union). The reverse features the arms of the republic encircled by the nations name in Spanish REPUBLICA PERUANA, the mint monogram LIMAE, the assayer's initials JM and the date 1826.  The denomination 8 E flanks the arms.

This coin was minted at the Cuzco mint and represents the first type of this denomination minted under the republic.   The obverse has a standing liberty encircled by the nation's motto FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION (Firmness and Happiness for the Union). The reverse features the arms of the republic encircled by the nations name in Spanish REPUBLICA PERUANA, the mint CUZCO, the assayer's initial G. and the date 1830.  The denomination 8 E flanks the arms.

This coin was minted at the Cuzco mint and represents the first type of this denomination minted under the republic.   The obverse has a standing liberty encircled by the nation's motto FIRME Y FELIZ POR LA UNION (Firmness and Happiness for the Union). The reverse features the arms of the republic encircled by the nations name in Spanish REPUBLICA PERUANA, the mint CUZCO, the assayer's initial A, 21 Q, and the date 1840.  The denomination 1 E flanks the arms.
