FIRST REPUBLIC (1848 -1851)

10 Francs - 1851 - A

Edge - Reeded

Mintage - 3,115M

This coin's obverse pictures Ceres.  REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE surrounds the bust.  Below the base of the bust is the engraver's name L. MERLEY F.  A fasces is to the left of that and a leafy branch is to the right. The reverse has the denomination  10 FRANCS in the centre encircled by a wreath which, in turn, is encircled by the motto LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE. The mintmark A (for the Paris mint) above the date 1851 is below the wreath.  Privy marks of a dog's head are to the left and a hand to the right at the stems of the wreath.


20 Francs - 1850 - A

KM-762 - 6,452 g - 21 mm

This coin's obverse pictures Ceres.  REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE surrounds the bust.  Below the base of the bust is the engraver's name L. NAPOLEON III (1852 -1870)

This coin's obverse pictures President Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (b1808-d1873) (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte).   His name surrounds the bust.  Below the base of the bust is the engraver's name BARRE.  Privy marks of a torch is to the left of that and an anchor is to the right. The reverse has the denomination 20 FRANCS and the date 1852 in the centre encircled by a wreath which, in turn, is encircled by the motto REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE. The mintmark A (for the Paris mint) is below the wreath.

This coin's obverse pictures Emperor Napoleon III (b1808-d1873).  NAPOLEON III is to the left of the bust and EMPEREUR (Emperor) to the right of the bust.  Below the base of the bust is the engraver's name Barre with privy marks of a bee and an anchor to the left and right, respectively. The reverse has the denomination 5 FRANCS and the date 1856 in the centre encircled by a wreath. EMPIRE FRANÇAIS surrounds the wreath at the top. The mintmark A (for the Paris mint) is below the wreath.


5 Francs - 1860 -BB
