This coin's obverse pictures King Louis Philippe I (b1773-d1850). LOUIS PHILIPPE I is to the left of the bust and ROI DES FRANÇAIS (King of the French) to the right of the bust. Below the base of the bust is the engraver's name DOMARD F. The reverse has the denomination 20 FRANCS, the anchor privy mark and mint mark A (for the Paris mint) and the date 1831 in the centre encircled by a wreath.

This coin's obverse pictures an allegorical figure representing the Law. REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE surrounds the top of the figure. Below the base of the figure is the engraver's name Dupre. A fasces is to the left of that and the Gallic cock is to the right. The reverse has the denomination 20 FRANCS and the date 1848 in the centre encircled by a wreath which, in turn, is encircled by the motto LIBERTE EGALITE FRATERNITE. The mintmark A (for the Paris mint) is below the wreath. Privy marks of a dog's head are to the left and a hand to the right at the stems of the wreath.
