SPANISH COLONIAL - VICEROYALTY OF PERU-CAPTAINCY OF CHILE

The obverse features a bust of Ferdinand VII encircled by the Latin legend FERDIN-VII-D-G-HISP-ET-IND-REX (Ferdinand VII by Grace of God King of Spain and the Indies) with the date 1814 below the bust.  The reverse has the crowned Habsburg arms encircled by a garter of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The denomination 8 S flanks the arms.  The letters FJ , initials of the mintmasters (for Francisco Rodriguez Brochero and Jose Maria de Bobadilla) are at the right bottom.

This coin was the first series of 8 Escudo pieces after the formation of the republic.  The obverse has a scene of two volcanoes in a mountain range under a radiating sun with A.D. 1818 within a wreath.  A Spanish legend EL ESTADO DE CHILE CONSTITUT o INDEPENDIENTE * (The Independent Constitutional State of Chile). The reverse has two Chilean flags flanking a monument., all within a wreath.  The national legend POR LA RAZON, O LA FUERA (For the Reason, or the Outside), the mintmark o over S, the denomination 8E, the initial I for the mintmaster, and the date 1824.

The obverse has the Chilean arms surrounded by the legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE (Republic of Chile), the mintmark (S with a superimposed o), and the date at the bottom. The reverse features a standing Liberty figure with the Constitution on a pedestal to her right surrounded by the legend IGUALDAD ANTE LA LEI (Equality Before the Law) with the denomination 10 Ps at the bottom.

The obverse has the Chilean arms surrounded by the legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE (Republic of Chile), the mintmark (S with a superimposed o), and the date 1859/8 at the bottom. The reverse features a standing Liberty figure with the Constitution on a pedestal to her right surrounded by the legend IGUALDAD ANTE LA LEI (Equality Before the Law) with the denomination 5 Ps at the bottom.


2 Pesos - 1860

The obverse has the Chilean arms surrounded by the legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE (Republic of Chile), the mintmark (S with a superimposed o), and the date 1860 at the bottom. The reverse features a standing Liberty figure with the Constitution on a pedestal to her right surrounded by the legend IGUALDAD ANTE LA LEI (Equality Before the Law) with the denomination 2 Ps at the bottom.
