This obverse of this coin has a bust of Pope Pius XI (b1857-d1939) surrounded by the Latin legend PIVS-XI-PONT-MAX-ANNO-VIII (Pius XI Supreme Pontiff Year Eight).  The reverse has a figure of Jesus Christ encircled by the county's name in Italian STATO DELLA CITTA DEL VATICANO (State of the City of the Vatican)  with the denomination LIRE 100 and the date 1929 below. Pius was born Achille Ratti. He negotiated the Concordat and the Lateran Treaties with Italy which granted the Vatican separate State status in 1929 in  exchange for relinquishing claims to the former Papal States.

His reputation has been attacked in current times by historians who rewrite history to suit their fancies.

Pius was born Eugenio Pacelli. His reputation has been attacked in current times by historians who rewrite history to suit their fancies.
