Van Riebeeck was the member of the Dutch East India Company who took command of the Company post at Cape Town.

The reverse features an eland with the denomination KRUGERRAND above, the date flanking the antelope, and the gold fineness and content below. This was the first year of issue of the first bullion coin created especially for gold trading. Kruger was elected vice president of the Transvaal in 1874 and later president in 1882 being reelected four times.
