The obverse features a bust of George VI (b1895-d1952). GEORGIVS SEXTVS REX (George VI King) surrounds the bust.  The obverse was designed by Thomas H Paget. The reverse has a running Springbok. The date 1952 is at the top. The denomination £ ½ is at the bottom and the country's name SOUTH AFRICA (in English) is to the left and SUID AFRIKA (in Afrikaans) is to the right.

The reverse has a running Springbok. The date 1954 is at the top. The denomination £ 1 is at the bottom and the country's name SOUTH AFRICA (in English) is to the left and SUID AFRIKA (in Afrikaans) is to the right. This is a Proof only issue.

The obverse features a bust of Jan van Riebeeck  (b1619-d1677).  Around the bust is the country's motto in Afrikaans EENDRAG MAAK MAG and English UNITY IS STRENGTH.  The reverse features an eland with the denomination 2 R below, the date 1965 at the top flanked by the country's name in Afrikaans ZUID AFRIKA and English SOUTH AFRICA. Van Riebeeck was the member of the Dutch East India Company who took command of the Company post at Cape Town.
