Agustín Cosme Damián de Iturbide y Arámburu was a career Spanish soldier who fought against the Mexican revolutionaries until 1816 when he switched sides, taking his forces with him to the independence fighters. Iturbide's backers wanted a European monarch on the Mexican throne. None accepted so Iturbide was persuaded to take the throne. He did so on 21 July 1822 and  he was crowned 'Augustus I, Constitutional Emperor of Mexico.' The state governors and military soon tired on him and they proclaimed Mexico a republic in 1823. He abdicated on 19 March 1823 and agreed to exile in Italy. Contrary to his promise he returned to Mexico in 1824 where he was immediately arrested and executed. Interestingly, his grandson, Augustin de Iturbide y Green, was appointed heir apparent to Emperor Maximilian in 1865.

MEXICAN EMPIRE

Max_1P.jpg (30577 bytes)

MODERN FANTASY TOKEN - 1865

0,49 g - 10 mm

This token was made about 1965 in Mexico. It has an image of Emperor Maximilian with the legend MAXIMILIANO EMPERADOR. The reverse has a crowned eagle with IMPERIO MEXICANO around the top half and a wreath around the bottom half with a date 1865 below the eagle.

The token is smaller than the 1 Peso pieces and weighs about 30% of a peso coin. There are several versions of this FANTASY piece that are being sold on eBay by unscrupulous dealers. Some of the more recent ones are hideously amateurish in their obverse design such as this one:

Max PPP.jpg (32122 bytes)

The reverse has a 333 that probably denotes the gold fineness which means this piece has no more the €2 (or two U.S. dollars) of gold. Yet, these FANTASIES are selling in the range of €40 to €50!

This item is purely a fabrication, it is not a coin nor is it a replica of a coin. It is merely a figment of someone's imagination and the pity of it all is that many people are purchasing this item thinking it is a coin. One dealer on eBay who sells the amateurish design always keeps the bidders' IDs private so as to prevent honest dealers from disclosing these facts to the unwary bidders (interestingly, most of his auctions on real numismatic items do not have IDs hidden!)
