The obverse depicts the arms of the Free State of Hamburg with the German name FREIE UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG (Free and Hanseatic State of Hamburg).  The mintmark J (for the Hamburg mint( is at the bottom.  The reverse has the Royal Arms of the German Empire encircled by the German legend for GERMAN EMPIRE and the date 1878.  At the bottom is the denomination 20 MARK. The reverse is Type II.
