This ecu d'or du au briquet was issued during the reign of Charles VII.(  (b1403-d1461). The obverse has the crowned shield  of France Flanked by Fleur cde lis with the Latin legend +KAROLVS:DEI:GRA:FRANCORVM:REX. The reverse has a floriated cross with a crownion each angle encircled by the legend XPS:VINCIT:XPS:REGNAT:XPS:IMPERAT.  Struck in Montpellier (fourth dot on obverse and reverse) in 1445 (2nde emission - Duplessy 511a)

1 Ecu d'or du Dauphine - ca 1530

This ecu d'or du Daphine was issued during the reign of Francis I (b1494-d1547). The obverse has the arms of France and the Dauphine with the Latin legend +FRANCIS:DEI:GRA:FRANCORVM:REX. The reverse has a floriated cross with a crowned F in two quadrants encircled by the legend XPS:VINCIT:XPS:REGNAT:XPS:IMPERAT.


1 Louis d'Or - 1788-I

The Louis d'Or was a long issued gold coin of royalist France.  It is composed of 0,917 fine gold. This coin's obverse pictures King Louis XVI (b1765-d1793).  His bust is encircled by the Latin legend LUD-XVI-D-G FR-ET-NAV-REX (Louis XVI, King of France and Navarre). Below the bust is the mint director's privy mark of five arrowed fasces (for Louis Naurissart de Forest).  The reverse has the crowned shields with the the Latin legend CHRS-REGN-VINC-IMPER, the engraver's privy mark (cross for Jean Baptiste Daniel La Vallee) and the date 1788.  Below the shields is the mintmark I for the Limoges mint.

This coin's obverse pictures King Louis XVI (b1765-d1793).  His bust is encircled by the Latin legend LUD-XVI-D-G FR-ET-NAV-REX (Louis XVI, King of France and Navarre). Below the bust is the mint director's privy mark of the lamb of God (Joseph Lambert).  The reverse has the crowned shields with the the Latin legend CHRS-REGN-VINC-IMPER , the engraver's privy mark (goat for Nicholas Belin) and the date 1786.  Below the shields is the mintmark B for the Rouen mint. This coin shows adjustment marks on both sides. These are file marks where the planchet was overweight and mintworkers filed it down to remove the excess gold

Below the bust is the mint director's privy mark of a bee (Jean-Claude Gabet).  The reverse has the crowned shields with the the Latin legend CHRS-REGN-VINC-IMPER , the engraver's privy mark (eagle's head ) and the date 1787.  Below the shields is the mintmark D for the Lyon mint.

The reverse has the denomination 40 FRANCS in the centre encircled by a wreath and the French legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE (French Republic) with the date AN XI (Year 11 - 1803) at the bottom with the mintmark A to the right (for the Paris mint) and the cock privy mark to the left.

The reverse has the denomination in the centre encircled by a wreath and the French legend EMPIRE FRANÇAIS (French Empire) with the date 1811 at the bottom with the mintmark A to the right (for the Paris mint) and the cock privy mark to the left. The die cutter first added the cock privy mark to the right side where the mintmark was to go. He then stamped the "A" over the cock. The inset picture shows the A/cock in magnified form.

The reverse has the denomination in the centre encircled by a wreath and the French legend EMPIRE FRANÇAIS (French Empire) with the date 1814 at the bottom with the mintmark A to the right (for the Paris mint) and the cock privy mark to the left.  Bonaparte was defeated by the Allies in 1814 and exiled to Elba Island.

The reverse has the denomination in the centre encircled by a wreath and the French legend EMPIRE FRANÇAIS (French Empire) with the date 1815 at the bottom with the mintmark A to the right (for the Paris mint) and the cock privy mark to the left.  This was issued in the One Hundred Days, after Bonaparte escaped from Elba, returned to Paris, but was defeated at Waterloo.

This NCLT "coin" commemorates the centenary of the donation of the Statue of Liberty to the United States in 1886.  Special proof editions were minted in Gold, Platinum, and Palladium. This is one of the 30.00 minted in Gold.  The obverse features a facing Miss Liberty to the right the dates 1886-1986 and the country's name REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE below.  The reverse has a stylized tree with the body being a Liberty Cap and the French national motto LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ.  The denomination 100 F is below with the date 1986 and privy marks flanking the trunk. To the right is the small legend DURAND, MEGRET.
