The obverse features a bust of Emperor Ferdinand I (b1793-d1875). FERD - I -D-G-AVSTR-IMP-HVNG-BOH - R - H - N - V - (Ferdinand I by Grace of God, Emperor and King of Hungary, Bohemia) surrounds the bust. There is the E mintmark below the bust (for the Gyulafehervar Hungary mint). The reverse has has the imperial Austro-Hungarian arms with GAL - LOD -ILL - A - A - 1848 - REX - LOMB - ET - VEN - DALM - (Galicia, Lod, Illyrium, A A 1848 King of Lombardy Venetia and Dalmatia) around the sides. On 15 March 1848, the Hungarians revolted and established a independent republic. The Austrians crushed this rebellion late that year. This coin was minted in this momentous year.

There is a star below the bust. The reverse has has the imperial Austro-Hungarian arms with IMPERIVM AVSTRIACVM (Austrian Empire) around the top. The denominations flank the eagle's tail feathers. The date 1892 is at the bottom.
